At Squirrel & The Bee, we are often asked about the prices of our products. People wonder why we are more expensive than other conventional bakeries. Of course, this is a very normal and legitimate question, since there aren’t many bakeries out there quite like ours. 😉 So we thought we’d take a moment to talk about the importance of our ingredients and the quality of our products.
We take pride in the fact that our baked goods are all completely gluten-free, grain-free, refined sugar-free and most are dairy free. These aren’t just buzzwords we throw around to get Instagram likes, they truly mean something to us. Foods with these qualities are extremely healthy and nutritious, in addition to being delicious. We’ve already spoken of the benefits of maintaining a grain-free diet in a previous post, but there are many benefits to removing dairy and refined sugars from your diet, as well.
In order to create baked goods that meet these standards, we intentionally choose very specific ingredients. Instead of white flour flours, we use nut-based flours. Instead of conventional dairy milk, we make almond and coconut-milk from scratch every single day. Instead of white sugar, we use local honey. Instead of conventional butter and oil, we use grass-fed butter and coconut oil. Instead of conventional eggs, we use cage-free eggs. The list goes on and on! Each of these ingredients is chosen very thoughtfully, as they all serve a purpose in creating nourishing, healthy and soul-satisfying baked goods. Don’t get us wrong, good quality food comes at a price and we understand that. These raw ingredients are significantly more expensive then their conventional counterparts. For example, if you look on Amazon, you will see that a pound of almond flour costs approximately $9.00, while a pound of white flour costs $0.20 cents. That’s a huge difference! This might make you wonder why processed foods made from white flour and sugar are so cheap, but that’s a whole other can of worms we can discuss another time.
We know it might seem crazy to use such expensive ingredients in all of our products, but we know the power of such quality foods. They are extremely beneficial for people with digestive disorders, autoimmune issues and various other chronic diseases, as they can actually have healing properties on the digestive system. Aside from people with specific dietary restrictions, these foods are nutritious for everyone, and consistent intake of such high quality foods can help prevent future medical issues as well. We are usually so concerned with the cost of high quality, nutritious foods that we don’t realize in choosing to eat these foods, we are making an investment into our health and well-being for the long term. The better foods we put in our body, the better we feel, the healthier we are, and the less likely we are to become sick and have additional medical related expenses in the future.
One of our customers told me of her philosophy when we first opened: she can pay more now for healthy, nutritious and delicious foods or she can pay her doctor and pharmacist later on if she doesn’t feed her body well. As someone who used food to help heal and recover from Ulcerative Colitis, I couldn’t agree more.
